Nottinghamshire Young Pianist

Of The Year 2007.

CONGRATULATIONS to the four finalists; Coleman Chan, Sara Watanabe, Enpei Qu and Isata Kannah-Mason. They all played excellently and the judges had a very difficult decision to select one winner.  Eventually the winner was anounced as Isata Kannah-Mason.

All four finalists will record a CD at the Clements Studio. These will be available around March / April 2008. Please contact Clement Pianos fro further details.

We would also like to thank the judges for their time ,  knowledge, and skill.

Details will be available shortly regarding the Nottinghamshire Young Pianist of the Year 2008 Competition.

Mike Gowland

Mike Gowland graduated with a degree in Jazz music from Middlesex University having majored in Performance with Piano as his first study. Has since performed professionally all over the world as a soloist, bandsman and musical director. Mike’s teaching career began in Australia, working with youth bands and piano tuition.  He went on to run the Jazz course at Clarendon College, New College Nottingham for five years before returning to full time freelance performance. As well as performing Mike now has a busy piano teaching practise and in September 2006 became Head of Nottingham Music School.

 

Philip Collin

Philip Collin was organ scholar at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and then went on to do post-graduate diploma in piano accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he studied with John York and took part in masterclasses given by Graham Johnson and Iain Burnside.

Since then, Philip has performed widely in the UK and abroad as a song accompanist and in 2001 recorded an album of songs, ‘The Soul of Orpheus’ with the soprano Sally Bradshaw. He particularly specialises in English song; he has written for Piano Magazine on Britten’s ‘Songs and Proverbs of William Blake’ and in 2006 performed all of Gerald Finzi’s songs for voice and piano in the Nottingham Finzi Festival, an event which he co-directed.

Philip has held numerous organist and choirmaster posts and is currently Director of Music of St. Peter’s Church, Nottingham. He has been an occasional rehearsal pianist for the Philharmonic Chorus and is accompanist and assistant conductor of the Nottingham Bach Choir. He also writes, produces and performs pop music as a member of two bands, one in London and one in Nottingham.

 

Clive Newton

Clive studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from where he graduated in the late 1970’s, specializing in piano and trumpet. For some time Clive was principal trumpet with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. He began his career as Head of Music at the Mundella School, followed by a period of instrumental teaching in Nottinghamshire schools.  Since 1991, Clive has run a private teaching practice, tutoring piano, brass and theory.  He was also a practical and theory examiner for the Guildhall School of Music from 1989 until 2006 examining up to Diploma level and had responsibility for training other examiners.

 

Ian Burton

Ian Burton graduated from Durham University and completed a post-graduate education certificate at Birmnigham University. He is currently Music Development Manager for the City of Nottingham Children’s Services and project co-ordinator for Musical Futures Nottingham. He has previously held posts in many areas of music education, including senior lecturer in music education at Huddersfield University, course leader for PGCE secondary-music at Bath Spa University College and Director of Music in various comprehensive schools and colleges. Ian is a member of the QCA Music Development Group, has carried out inspections for OFSTED  and is an educational advisor  for the First National Music Week. He has been principal examiner for OCR A-level music, a subject advisor for AQA GCSE music, and has been involved with the development of the national curriculum and music specifications for both GCSE and A level. Ian is author of the Rhinegold GCSE Listening books and co-author of the DFES/Musical Futures Personalising Music Learning Resource Pack and the Rhinegold AQA and OCR GCSE study guides. He is active as a pianist, conductor, composer and arranger with particular interests in creating material for use in schools.

 

THE JUDGE’S DECISION WILL BE FINAL AND NO CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE ENTERED INTO.
